Donald Freeke has joined the CRA team as a Senior Civil and Structural Consultant, as CRA further enhances its growing Civil Engineering capability. With a keen interest in Nuclear New Build, Donald will be based in the South West of England, supporting a number of key clients in the area.
Previously, Donald worked for 5 years with Buro Happold, as a structural engineer, followed by 6 years with Wood (previously Amec Foster Wheeler) in their nuclear business, as a senior structural engineer. He is a chartered engineer with both the IStructE and the ICE, and has both UK and international experience, having worked in both Saudi Arabia and Japan.
For the past 4 years, Donald has been heavily involved in supporting the Generic Design Assessment (GDA) for the UK Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR) project and it is through this that he spent 3 years in Japan, working with a leading design consultant there. His role was as a consultant, providing UK context to the Japanese design team, while also acting as a liaison with a supporting team in the UK.
Having now returned to the UK, he is keen to continue working on nuclear new build projects, using the knowledge and experience gained from his time in Japan, and sees CRA as an ideal place to do this. Donald said: “Working in Japan was an amazing experience. I loved the culture and general attitude where politeness, honesty and great service is expected as standard. It was also fascinating to work with Japanese design consultants, particularly on the seismic analysis and design of structures. They have so much expertise, having to deal with strong earthquakes on a regular basis, so discussing their methodologies and comparing it with what we do in the UK was very interesting and enlightening. I am excited to get the chance to develop this further with CRA.”
Outside of work, Donald is a keen sportsman who enjoys many sports including: cycling, hiking, badminton and particularly football. During his time in Japan he was regular member of the British Embassy Football Club, who play in an amateur league in Tokyo.
