Dr Calum Powrie joined CRA earlier this year and is CRA’s Chief Consultant, Safety Case Service Lead. Calum holds a PhD in experimental nuclear physics and a BSc in Applied Physics. He is a Chartered Physicist and Member of the Institute of Physics. Calum has worked in the nuclear industry for 20 years.
We posed Calum some questions to find out some more about him.
Where did you join CRA from?
Horizon Nuclear Power where I was Head of Safety Case Management for the Wylfa Newydd Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR) project (now suspended).
What attracted you to joining CRA?
It is a specialist organisation with a good reputation in the industry. There is the opportunity to make a real difference given the relatively small size of the company.
What type of work are you excited about executing for CRA’s clients?
Taking my experience from Horizon and applying it not only for other new build projects but also to assist clients with existing facilities to develop and implement fully holistic safety cases.
Do you have any hobbies / interests outside of work?
I am the very proud owner of a 1/8th scale coal fired steam locomotive built by my father that I maintain and run. I have been fascinated with steam locomotives since I was a young child.
In May 2019, as part of the CRA Risk & Safety Forum Blog Series, Calum wrote a post that discussed safety case development, outlining the process to deliver a good safety case. You can read it here.
