Speaker: Jonas Englund
Topic: Risk Monitoring: Past, Present & Future at Heysham 2 and Torness
Overview: This presentation reviews Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) risk monitor development and use in the UK, with a focus on the Heysham 2 (HY2) and Torness (TOR) stations, which led the way with introduction of probabilistic risk monitors as part of their design basis implemented in the 1980s. We will present the scope of the risk monitor and operational benefits derived, along with technical challenges overcome through their development over the last 25 years.
The current needs and use of the Heysham 2 and Torness risk monitors is briefly reviewed in the worldwide context. This is followed by a look ahead to the future and anticipated improvements in risk monitoring (scope and functionality) with focus on station operational needs as technology and software advance. An outline of the current HY2/TOR risk monitor sustainability projects is presented; exploring the expected improvements and discussing key known challenges. NPP developments are now under way in many countries throughout the world and there are growing opportunities for collaboration and optimisation of risk assessment to the benefit of all populations (with due attention to issues of national / cyber security and intellectual property).
Jonas Englund is a Nuclear Safety Engineer within EDF Energy’s Design Authority in the UK. He holds an honours degree in Chemical & Process Engineering. He started his career with BNFL supporting the Magnox reactors, and then moved to British Energy (now EDF Energy) in 2006. Since 2006 Jonas has mostly worked with the PSAs supporting Heysham 2 and Torness stations including development, data update and self-assessment. However his main focus has been in amending and configuring the PSAs to support the “Essential Systems Outage Program” (ESOP) risk monitor at those stations. To that end, Jonas co-authored the ESOP implementation safety cases and continues to lead the technical governance of the risk monitors via an internal working group. He is currently the Architect Engineer and Safety Case Officer responsible for delivery of the Heysham 2 & Torness Risk Monitor Sustainability Project. Jonas also provides PSA training to others while coordinating EDF Energy’s internal overview course.
