Announcing the second speaker at CRA’s annual Risk Forum, 5th and 6th October in Stratford upon Avon.
Speaker: Dr. Barry Kirwan (Eurocontrol, France)
Topic: Pushing the human performance envelope – simulating challenging scenarios for pilots.
Interesting Fact Barry Kirwan is a well known author and also a scuba diving instructor.
Accidents these days are rarely caused by a single human factor like fatigue or workload or loss of situation awareness – but rather a combination of these factors. So, where do the performance edges lie? At what point should automation take over?
This presentation will show highlights from a large scale research project (Future Sky Safety) where pilots are literally pushed in advanced full-scope cockpit simulators to find their performance edges, and to see how they can recover from them.
Barry Kirwan is the Safety Culture Programme Manager for Eurocontrol which strives to improve the safety culture of Air Traffic Management throughout Europe. He has been assisted in his presentation by Matthias Wies from the national centre for aerospace, energy and transportation research in Germany (DLR).
